This book aims to contribute to language teaching with a specific focus on a new field of didactics, the didactics of the dictionary (Wörterbuchdidaktik).

Thus, through theoretical and empirical investigation of the discussed topic, an effort was made to: define the scope and analyze the basic principles governing dictionary didactics, examine various parameters directly or indirectly related to the use of the dictionary in the teaching and learning of German as a foreign language, highlight the importance of teaching how to use the dictionary within the context of German language instruction in the Greek educational and academic space, and to present indicative examples of exercises/activities that incorporate and support the use of the dictionary in German language classes.

Additionally, the aim of this book is to highlight the role that the dictionary can play under suitable conditions in students' autonomous learning and to emphasize the need to cultivate a related work culture with the dictionary in education, so that the dictionary becomes a permanent support tool throughout lifelong learning for the learners.

Finally, since scientific theories in the context of language teaching are meaningful only when put into practice, this publication also aims to contribute to the relevant debate among researchers, scientists, authors of foreign language teaching manuals, and – most importantly – practitioners/teachers in the field.
