This book focuses on the Teaching of History in conjunction with historical culture and specifically the art of cinema, in the context of multiliteracies. The aim of our research is to approach how students acquire historical literacy skills, with the contribution of visual literacy, and shape attitudes.
The difficulties observed in understanding history have led to the use of new media (historical fiction film) and the application of a new teaching method, which concerns primary school students (5th-6th Grade) and middle school students. Our method is based on Perkins' strategy as well as the assumptions of Moniot and Kavvouras.
The historical context includes colonialism in the 16th century AD and the effects it had on the culture of Indigenous people, in relation to the "conquistadors." Regarding methodology, a mixed-method action research approach was used. The analysis and interpretation of the results, with the main tool being Social Representations, is conducted through triangulation of data.
The analysis of the film "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" compared to another film, historical texts, and primary sources (multivocality) contributes to the constructive acquisition of declarative-procedural-conceptual knowledge, historical thinking, visual literacy, as well as the formation of primarily negative attitudes towards colonialism. Answers are provided regarding aesthetic enjoyment, interest in history, the distinction of elements, historical knowledge, and thinking.
Historical fiction cinema can be utilized, under certain conditions, in the teaching and learning of history.
