Description & Specifications

Biology is the science that studies life. It is the scientific expression of human curiosity to understand themselves and their environment.

Biology provides us with knowledge to solve global issues such as diseases, environmental pollution, overpopulation, and food shortages. As a highly complex science, it requires knowledge from other sciences such as Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics to study the intricate phenomena of life.

Modern Biology therefore gains special significance as applied fields like Medicine, Agriculture, Ecology, and Biotechnology are called upon to solve the fundamental problems of the survival of our entire planet.

Thus, a student of biological sciences quickly discovers the importance and interest of the field, as well as the variety of scientific directions available, where the application of findings from other sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science) is necessary to address important everyday problems.

The purpose of an introductory Biology course is: a) to define the subject of biological science, b) to provide the essential fundamental knowledge applicable to all types of organisms and prepare students to understand it at a more advanced and specialized level, and c) to synthesize various biological knowledge to understand the phenomenon of life, not only at the level of individual organisms but also at the level of the entire system of organisms and their environment.

The following text aims to meet the needs of the mandatory course Introduction to Biology for the Biology degree at the University of Athens. Moving from simple description to the analysis of experimental approaches to biological problems, the course introduces the "magic" of life. Presenting the experimental basis of our knowledge is critical. We must show students how we know what we know.
