I come from AKG 701 and Sennheiser 599hd. In short, the Hifiman HE400se are like taking the soundstage of the AKG and the warmth and full sound of the Sennheiser and combining them.

My use is music, meetings, movies. I can't complain at all about the quality they offer given that they are cheaper than the previous ones I had but also the sound is generally better. To be more specific about the "better sound" I will say this: I loved the AKG for their soundstage and I used them with a Creek OBH11 headphone amplifier. Their sound was amazing, accurate but somewhat washed out. It was like listening to a symphony (I listen to classical) but the instruments and the orchestra are very far away. So yes, amazing soundstage but washed out sound.

As for the Sennheiser, I can say the soundstage seemed very small to me. The sound was somewhat warm and easy to listen to and wear all day. Really their comfort was amazing and they were top notch for classical music. The most fitting word is "comfortable" in every aspect.

The Hifiman are like you took a somewhat smaller soundstage from the AKG, and filled the sound like the Sennheiser but without being so warm. They seem to me to be exactly at the point that I really like. They are interesting but not so relaxing in sound and not so relaxing to wear for hours.

The build quality is top notch. It is much superior to the Sennheiser and seems better than the AKG as well.

To sum up. At this price, I don't think anything else comes close. If you want perfect comfort, go for Sennheiser. If you want incredible soundstage, go for 701/702. If you want to be somewhere in the middle and you don't mind a somewhat heavy headphone and tighter than the Sennheiser, then with eyes closed get the Hifiman. I doubt they will disappoint you at 120/130 euros.
