The reasoning behind the selection, scope, and depth of the 15 chapters that compose it was based on the undergraduate curriculum of the Departments of Geology & Geoenvironment and Port and Shipping Management at the University of Athens, as well as other related departments in higher education institutions where the subject of Oceanography is taught.

The book may also prove useful at the postgraduate level for students who want to engage with the subject of Oceanography without necessarily having introductory knowledge of all the individual branches of Oceanography. Additionally, an innovation of the book is its reference to the Mediterranean and the Greek Seas in all its individual chapters, so that the reader can gain a concise, as complete as possible, view of the marine environment.

The content of the book is divided into 15 chapters covering the individual scientific branches of Oceanography, namely Biological Oceanography (Ch. 4), Geological Oceanography or Marine Geology (Ch. 9-13), Physical Oceanography (Ch. 2-8), and Chemical Oceanography (Ch. 3).
