When the world refers to someone as a chav, it only means one thing. They may give different definitions, but they always mean the same thing. They mean that you are scum, they mean that you haven’t received the proper education, and it’s as if they are saying "stay away from my family," as if they are calling you a criminal and telling you that you are useless and it’s your fault, mate.
For the political left, Hunter's people are the ignorant and ill-informed; for the winning right, they are nothing but the filthy and discarded trash of the working class.
Chav/Solidarity from the Underground is partly an autobiography, partly a reflection on trauma, class, and identity, but mostly it is a grand slap in the face of the "politics of dignity" – however, it is primarily an attempt to clearly hear the heartbeat of the chavs.
This collection of texts analyzes the lived experiences of its author. Hunter was, as a child, a sex worker, as a teenager, a crack addict, and later, a violent abuser but also a social activist. Thus, his very life is the tool he uses to examine the ways our class experiences shape the way we think and engage in politics.
