Description

The edition includes the latest data regarding the role and importance of Emergency Medicine. The scope of situations that Emergency Medicine (EM) is called to address is broad and covers a wide range of ages and medical specialties, which is why specialized training for medical and nursing personnel is deemed essential.

The twenty-three chapters of the text thoroughly and comprehensively depict the breadth of the subject matter, with images, diagrams, and tables significantly contributing to a better understanding of the content. The care of resuscitation and stabilization of patients by physicians, alongside the initiation of laboratory and clinical investigation of the condition, form the basis of the final therapeutic regimen.

After the introduction to Emergency Medicine, the book discusses the topic of the initial approach to patients with urgent health problems. It then examines the common issues that lead patients to the Emergency Departments (ED), urgent matters from the respiratory system, cardiological issues, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, shock, trauma, urgent otorhinolaryngological problems, infectious, neurological, endocrine urgencies, acute electrolyte disturbances, acute gastrointestinal bleeding, as well as nephrological, hematological, and dermatological emergencies.

A separate section includes pediatric emergencies as well as urgent problems in newborns. Additionally, all urgent situations caused by natural factors and cases of poisoning are mentioned separately. The last chapter titled "First Aid" consolidates all the fundamental principles for providing first aid that can be applied by anyone in any circumstance.

• Ioannis Kiumis is an Emeritus Professor at the Department of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Vasileios Grosomanidis is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Department of Medicine, AUTH.
