The Aegean Sea is the sea enclosed between the coasts of mainland Greece, the coasts of Asia Minor, and Crete. It starts from Samothrace and reaches Kastelorizo. Its climate is characterized as Mediterranean, and the largest city of the geographical area is Rhodes.
According to mythology, it was named after the King of Athens, Aegeus. His son, Theseus, went to Crete to kill the Minotaur and promised his father that if he returned victorious, he would change the sails of his ship from black to white. Theseus killed the Minotaur, but on his return, he forgot to change the sails. His father, who was waiting for him at Cape Sounion, upon seeing the ship with the black sails, out of despair, threw himself into the sea and drowned. Since then, the sea has been called the Aegean.
