Description

This study aims to highlight various aspects of the presence of the Muslim population in the Greek state from the beginning of the Balkan Wars until the Exchange of Populations. These two chronological boundaries mark the integration of a large Muslim minority into the Greek state and the migration of the majority of its members to Turkey.

After presenting the geographical distribution and demographic volume of Muslims in the Greek New Countries, along with the fluctuations that occurred during the period 1912 - 1923, the interactions arising from two pairs of relationships are examined: the Muslim minority's relationship with the Greek administration and its relationship with the local Christian or refugee population.

The key question that the research aimed to address regarding the above relationships concerned how the former heterodox 'oppressor,' synonymous with the enemy of Hellenism, was treated by the representatives of the Greek central and local authorities, as well as by local Christians or refugees—former rayas and victims of the young Turkish or Kemalist persecutions.

Additionally, it was investigated whether these two pairs of relationships were influenced by events from a period full of upheavals and tensions, primarily the military conflicts (Balkan Wars, World War I, and the Asia Minor Campaign), the political dispute of the National Schism, and the aspirations of Greek foreign policy.

Drawing material from a wealth of unpublished archival sources, this study attempts to reconstruct the network of relationships with the Greek administration and the Christian neighbor, as well as the social life of the Muslim exchangees; that is, the other side of the Exchange of Populations.
