When Greek-American runner Alexi Pappas was four years old, her mother committed suicide, a tragic event that drastically changed the course of her life and made her seek female role models.
Female athletes were among the first women Pappas admired, and thus her Olympic dream was born. At the same time, she had creative aspirations: she wanted to make films and write. Despite setbacks and difficulties, Pappas didn’t let anything stand in her way until she achieved her dreams.
Within the same year, 2016, she participated in the Olympics and starred in her first feature film, in which she was also involved in writing and directing. However, great successes came at a high price for her – along with joy came sadness.
In Brave, Pappas candidly and honestly shares her struggle with depression and describes how she emerged into the bright side of life as a liberated woman. Unrestrained, exuberant, and always entertaining, Brave showcases Pappas's distinctive, captivating voice, recounting the milestones of her life so far and the lessons that fueled her career as both an athlete and a creator.
Pappas's experiences reveal how we can all overcome difficulties, become friends with pain, celebrate victory, enjoy the faith of our companions, and claim our share of joy. In short: how each of us can be brave.
