Description

Description

Dr. Thomas Tsakalakis deserves congratulations for having discovered a novel and interesting angle of approach to the work of Samuel Beckett. The arguments that Tsakalakis develops are particularly convincing.

In this intelligent and original study, Thomas Tsakalakis invites the reader to delve into Beckett's texts through the lens of contemporary philosophical examples and major social concerns. In the course of his research, the author clarifies not only the multifaceted role of humor in Beckett's paradoxical work but also the views of those thinkers who confront metaphysical pretension and the bureaucratic or other forms of violence it entails.

Instead of such violence, the author argues in favor of a new conception of justice, thanks to the revitalizing effect of Beckett's "misanthropic" humor. Tsakalakis's book constitutes a significant contribution to the field of Beckett studies.

Tsakalakis's excellent study is a foundational reference work for Beckett studies. By creating the humotopia, the author not only accesses Beckett's tragicomedies, cleverly parodying the current solemn and arbitrary interpretations of them, but also highlights the entropic Beckettian humor as a lever for subverting the modern society of spectacle and the established regime of truth for "successful" communication.

For Tsakalakis, the Beckett machine serves as the spark that activates his own writing-literary machine and organizes a textual field rich in literary references, theoretical arguments, cultural references, and communicative paradoxes, through which he playfully puts dominant philosophical examples to the test.

Above all, however, the author gifts us with the "joy of writing," making us laugh at our existence as an unnameable farce or, as he calls it, as a hilariously tragic humantopia.
