The Stoic Philosophy is more relevant than ever... To not be disturbed by anything is a great thing, truly the greatest of all, and it is something that elevates a person almost to the level of a god.
The best-selling series "Selected" by Oxy Editions is enriched with seven new titles, seven new small books of grand thoughts, which come to add to the previous 16 titles. Seneca "adapts" the concept of tranquility, emphasizing Democritus, through his dialogue with his friend Serenus.
The Roman rhetorician tries to heal him from anxiety and worry, using several of the methods of those who would later be characterized as Stoic philosophers and their understanding of the significance of mental health and peace for a happy person.
What begins as comfort and advice to a troubled friend suffering from existential problems and worries evolves into a deep dive into the human soul, where all the weapons for the war that rages within us since the beginning of the world and until the end are hidden – until we conquer the supreme good: spiritual peace, that special quality which even today, in this time we live in, and while almost two millennia have passed since the prominent Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote praising it, seems to be synonymous with the very salvation of man.
About the author: A significant philosophical figure of the Roman imperial period, Seneca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Cordoba 4 BC – Rome 65 AD) practiced rhetoric at a young age, rose to public office, and after an eight-year exile returned to Rome to take on the education of the young Nero, who would become emperor in 54 AD.
With his influence, he managed to promote legislative and tax reforms, until ultimately in 65 AD he was ordered to commit suicide, accused of being involved in a conspiracy against Nero. It remains unknown whether the accusations were valid, but Seneca obeyed and cut his veins, affirming his Stoic philosophical position that everything in life – even death – must be faced with dignity and courage.
