Description

The work of Hanna Segal, particularly on symbolism, aesthetics, and dreams, as well as her research on psychotic thinking, has established her as a prominent figure in psychoanalysis, especially in the Kleinian tradition.

In her work Dream, Fantasy, and Art, she reworks her views on these subjects and brings them to life through a new composition, reconnecting them with the work of Freud, Klein, and Bion.

Throughout the book, the clinical descriptions that she has excellently selected showcase the theory, exploring imagination and clearly capturing even the most difficult concepts in the reader's mind.

Through a creative interaction, theory and clinical examples are combined and applied to form the author's new and original theories on art and aesthetics.

The book begins with Freud's dream theory, vividly expressed with clinical material from Segal herself. It then moves on to a discussion of the concept of fantasy as used by Freud and Klein, and its relationship to dreams and thinking.

This is followed by a reference to the thought based on Segal's seminal work "Notes on the Formation of Symbols" (1957), which she further develops, linking it to Bion's work.

Next, pathological aspects of dreams are examined, again with compelling examples, that arise when symbolic thinking fails.

Finally, in the last two chapters, Segal returns to one of her earliest and most enduring interests – art, aesthetics, and imagination – highlighting, in an original yet sensitive manner, the relationship between "true" and "failed" art.

As Betty Joseph mentions in her introduction, Segal's writing, particularly in this book, significantly contributes to enriching psychoanalysis, not only with the clarity and acuity of her thought but also due to the depth and breadth of her interests and clinical creativity.
