Description

This book is a concise guide that will help you understand the dynamics of technological advancements and gain a comprehensive view of the main issues arising from the use of artificial intelligence in an ever-increasing number of areas of our lives.

Humanity currently has the opportunity to create, with machines as partners, conditions of prosperity for all. However, the risks are real, which is why we must all engage in the discussion. This glossary aims to equip everyone with the necessary knowledge and information to participate in it. The creation of thinking machines can be the best or the worst invention we have made; we decide.

The purpose of the book is to give you a good idea of the exciting developments that lie ahead and to encourage you to take the future into your own hands. Technology, like art, can be a beautiful and liberating vehicle, a force of love for life and others. Let us understand it better.

By automating decision-making systems, AI automates more and more tasks that were previously done at great or small cost by humans. Usually boring jobs, but also very complex, dangerous, and difficult ones. Automation takes advantage of the abundance of data and our computational power. The airplane's autopilot is the most classic and recognizable example to everyone. Airplane operators intervene only during takeoff and landing. The entire rest of the journey is entrusted to the airplane's automated systems. Early airplane flights included five people in the cockpit. Today there are only two. Tomorrow, who knows? The discussion reasonably revolves around the costs of automation, because we have seen this work before. Mass unemployment, insecurity, and political turmoil caused by technological disruptions are not insignificant. Carl Benedikt Frey, in his book The Technology Trap, warns us not to make the same mistakes and to prepare ourselves.

As a computer science scientist, I had no problem reading and understanding this book. It focuses on the applications of Artificial Intelligence in the present and the future. It discusses factors that have been affected by and will be affected by Artificial Intelligence, such as politics, racism, the economy, the job market, etc. The author certainly takes a stance with his words. He emphasizes the benefits and risks hidden in each application (medical, autonomous driving, etc.). Generally, there is no flow in the book. The book is structured like a dictionary, meaning it is divided into A B ... Ψ Ω, and for each letter, the concepts starting with that letter are presented, but in no case is it a dictionary. The concepts are explained, not defined. Obviously, this is good; the scientific definition would not be understood by the public. However, the presentation of concepts based on alphabetical order is certainly not the optimal way to present information, as well as the "casual" use of concepts in the explanation of other concepts, I believe, is easy only for those who already know the concepts and did not learn them moments ago. Of course, I do not think that this specific scientific subject can be further popularized. Many references to people, companies, books/movies of the time. A very modern book.
