The Ionian Suite is the first youthful work of Manos Hadjidakis. Information about the work is limited. The score was found shortly before the composer's death. It is speculated that it refers to the Ionian poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos.
This work, in terms of musical, morphological, harmonic, and technical processing, as well as from the title and the names of the parts (Suite, Sarabande, Scherzo, Song from the Aria, and Dance), recognizes and praises the Ionian as the only bridge of communication for Greece during the years of Ottoman rule, with the artistic creation of the rest of Europe.
The Suite is structured in five contrasting sections.
