Description

Generations of Greeks in Greece and abroad grew up with the legend of Olympic Airlines across five continents. However, most may be unaware of the details, the nuances, and the behind-the-scenes events that led to the creation of the airline with the Olympic rings, which survives to this day. In this highly mysterious story, 12 prominent politicians – who at some point served as prime ministers of Greece – were personally involved, as well as renowned businessmen such as Onassis, Niarchos, and Goulandris, bankers like Pesmazoglou, Kostopoulos, Zolotas, and Iliaskos, decision-making centers in London and Washington, as well as both foreign and local investors. Leveraging the unique narrative of a remarkable figure in the country’s business history, the "father" of political aviation in Greece and founder of TAE, Stefanos Zotos, Onassis and Squadron Leader X present the thrilling journey of Greece's air transport through unpublished records of the Civil Aviation, overturning myths and assumptions that have endured for decades up to the present day: the restart of a country after the devastating Occupation, which left it with not a single airplane; the birth of TAE, which would also become the first foreign investment welcomed by the country in the post-war period; London’s efforts to maintain the last vestiges of guardianship in the country through aviation; the opening of the airline market amid civil war; the state intervention of the Center governments; the extermination of TAE by the Rally government; the conflict between Onassis and Niarchos over the acquisition of the company; and the birth of Olympic Airlines.
