Description & Specifications

Colleagues and fellow travelers of George Kourias, we found it important to gather most of his writings into a volume, so as to reflect his journey from psychiatry to psychoanalysis and his contribution to the establishment of psychoanalytic discourse in Greece in recent decades.

Re-reading his texts led us to select not only those that highlight George Kourias's enduring concern and pursuit for connecting psychoanalytic theory with clinical practice through the axis of the cornerstone of transference and countertransference relationships but also his oral interventions, where the influence of his psychoanalytic perspective is reflected when approaching issues related to the functioning of mental health institutions.

“[...] bringing this work down from the shelf of the library and oblivion meant recalling how, in the development of a psychoanalyst, relative certainty gives way to increasingly intense doubts; does one gain, perhaps, in this exchange, as happens with Georges Brassens, when one relinquishes a corner of an umbrella for a corner of paradise? A difficult question. In any case, the inevitable partial loss of the umbrella that the theory offers may not be compensated by a corner of hell, yet it certainly leads the analyst to ever more painful questioning regarding what they ultimately do.

For there is no other example in the entire scientific field that resembles the psychoanalytic practice; on one hand, it is based on an exceptionally well-structured and constantly re-examined theoretical corpus and on the other, it maintains a minimal unambiguous relation with it, to the point that the theory provides no advice for specific interventions in therapy.”
