Before the martyrdom but also glorious events of 1821, there were other equally significant ones, from heroes who also fought for our freedom, only that we know very little about them and their actions. One of them, perhaps the most important, was Katsantonis.
We know about him what has survived through the years from our folk songs, which spoke of his deeds and struggles. Although he was frail and small as a child, he grew stronger and became quite robust. He was dark-haired with long black hair and large black mustaches. He had thick eyebrows and a manly forehead. An imposing face, with beautiful proportions. His chest always held proudly out. His voice was deep and warm, without many grandiose words, but with such persuasion that captivated those who heard it!
His name began to spread throughout the Wetlands, Xiromero, Agrafa, and Velouhi across the Tzoumerka. He became the fear and dread of the Turkocarbanians. The greatness of Katsantonis as a patriot and warlord resided mainly within him and manifested through his passion for freedom, his hatred for the oppressors, his incredible ingenuity in critical moments, and above all, his incredible bravery, which often bordered on self-sacrifice.
