The question was clear: what would the Europeans - that is, the EEC - do if Greece, as a member, were to be attacked by Turkey? Some in Athens in the 1970s had an easy answer: "If one of the members of the Community were to suffer an external attack, the others would mobilize in various ways and at different levels in support of it," wrote a major newspaper. "Greece gains strong support" was the bold headline of another. The course of events would prove that such publications would be equivalent to a kind of "preventive" fake news.
From the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greek and European documents - which come to light for the first time - and publications from the global press of the time, it seems that the defense argument for integration, protection from Turkey, began to weaken already in the first months of the negotiations in the 1970s. That is why journalist Antonis Papagiannidis, specializing in European issues and press matters, comments, "...how can one not be shocked when, step by step, they see that "the Greek elites of the time were wrong"? Or rather, that they chose to be wrong..."
