Senna (Cassia angustifolia) is a small shrub found primarily in Egypt, India, and Arab countries. It has traditionally been used as a supportive herbal laxative for daily bowel function. Its active ingredients are anthraquinone derivatives and their glycosides. Senna acts on the lower intestine and is particularly useful in relieving constipation.
It increases the peristaltic movements of the large intestine by irritating the colonic mucosa. It is often used for bowel evacuation before diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy. Senna is an FDA-approved, over-the-counter laxative product. Senna is also used for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, and weight loss.
Abuse of senna can worsen conditions with electrolyte disturbances. Senna should not be administered to individuals with dehydration or diarrhea. It should not be used by individuals with abdominal pain (whether diagnosed or not), intestinal obstruction, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, or stomach inflammation. Senna can cause electrolyte disturbances and may worsen heart conditions.
Should not be taken by individuals who are taking laxatives.
