Dimitris Papapostolou: A Source of Inspiration for the Younger Generations
The late Dimitris Papapostolou, an esteemed composer, studied Byzantine and European music and was distinguished for his pioneering choral arrangements of ecclesiastical hymns and orchestrations of folk songs. His work, which has been repeatedly awarded in international music competitions in Greece and abroad, has primarily been performed by the internationally recognized Experimental Choir, founded by him in Agios Nikolaos Chalandriou, where his choral tradition continues.
The composer and choir director successfully held concerts in Europe, the United States of America, and Africa. The Symphonic Orthodox Liturgy, whose publication I applaud, along with many other of his ecclesiastical compositions, deeply touch the soul, evoke emotions, and spiritually uplift.
In addition to his quality musical contributions, evidenced by his rich discography, Dimitris Papapostolou was also recognized in various ways for his significant participation in public affairs aimed at promoting contemporary Greek culture, both within Greece and abroad. This exceptional creativity was nourished by the Christian upbringing he received from his parents and by the Orthodox spiritual principles he embraced from his youth.
Within the clear atmosphere of Christian faith, he cultivated his musical talent, eagerly and diligently drawing from the wealth of the long-standing Byzantine tradition. Simultaneously, he researched with penetrating insight the various forms of modern music and, with patience, enthusiasm, and awareness of his limits, he struggled and succeeded in the creative synthesis of the older with the modern.
He will serve as a source of inspiration for the younger generations. Dimitris Papapostolou, experiencing the life-giving Orthodox spirituality, continually sought new sound forms to express his faith and devotion to Christ, the absolute Truth, the incarnate Love, the infinite Beauty.
