And yet, in this book that you hold, dear reader, you will find a mind posing indiscreet philosophical questions to the architects and workers who are today building the new Russia. Surely they do not have time for philosophies? They are building. However, I was still dominated by the refined concerns of the bourgeois, who has eaten, is full, others work for him, and he has the leisure to discuss, while his mind plays tricks on him.
Time passed, I strayed a lot, I suffered, until the true face of Russia shone within me, filled with blood and light. And now that I bring to mind the entire vision, what deeply moves me is this: For the first time, amid the bustling cities, in the snow-covered villages and the desolate steppes of Russia, I saw the Invisible so vividly.
And when I say "Invisible," I do not mean any priestly God nor any metaphysical Consciousness or any poetic reflection of desire; I mean the cosmogonic Force that uses us humans – and before us the animals, the plants, and matter – as its carriers, its beasts of burden, and is hurrying as if it had a Purpose and was following a path. You feel, here in Russia, the blind forces that create the eye and the light surrounding you.
I wish I could convey to you a bit of this emotion; that is the only purpose of this free book.
