Thus unfolds the great, seemingly paradoxical, contradiction of the Spanish soul, which so many wise men could not comprehend with logic: Passion and Nothingness! These are the two poles around which the Spanish soul revolves: passion, yearning, the warm embrace of life; and at the same time the feeling that all of this is nothing, it is the Nothingness, and that death is our greatest heir.

But the stronger a soul is in its feeling of Nothingness, the more intensely it lives every fleeting, vain moment. Death for strong souls is always the sharpest stimulant.
