The sinking of the whaling ship Essex by an enraged sperm whale in the Pacific in November 1820 set in motion one of the most dramatic sea stories of all time: the twenty survivors of the disaster boarded three small boats (one of which was struck again by a whale) and only eight of them survived their subsequent ordeal for 90 days, resorting to cannibalism of their fellow shipmates.
Three months after the destruction of the Essex, the whaling ship Dauphin, drifting along the coasts of South America, spotted a small boat in the open ocean. As they approached, they saw piles of bones at the bottom of the boat, at least two skeletons, with two survivors – nearly skeletal themselves – sucking the marrow from the bones of their dead companions.
