The name of the Virgin comes from the hymn of Apodeipno "’spile, Amolynte, ’chrante..." composed by the monk Paul of the Monastery of Evergetidos. In Orthodox iconography, Amolyntos is also known as the Virgin of the Passion, because Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding in their hands the symbols of passion, namely the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge.
