[...] The dimensions of the project can be understood if certain quantitative elements are mentioned. Out of the 2,163 settlements identified by the research in Asia Minor, more than half, namely 1,454, were located in Pontus.

Out of these, only 195 were ultimately studied because no information was found for the rest. These 795 settlements are scattered across the vast expanse of the Pontic region, stretching east of Paphlagonia along the coast of the Black Sea to the depths of the Anatolian Peninsula, in the area that the Center for Asia Minor Studies named the countries of the upper course of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The settlements of Pontus are scattered along the coasts where the major cities are located, Sinope, Amisos (Samsun), and Trebizond, the metropolis of the Pontic Hellenism. However, they also extend southwards into the interior, in the mountains of the Pontic Alps and the southern plateaus.

This is an entire Greek world that survived through many adversities from antiquity to the twentieth century in the Pontic region. The ethnographic depiction of this Hellenism is presented in the Exodus of Pontus. [...]
