What lies behind the enchanting power of art? Alfred Gell proposes a theory that radically deviates from previous interpretations. He argues that aesthetic theories adopt an extremely passive attitude towards works of art. Instead, he chooses to place emphasis on art as a form of action.
Artworks express complex intentions and mediate social action in his theoretical conception, merging faces and art objects. Gell explores the perceptual psychology of decorative patterns, art and the nature of the person, art in relation to religious practices such as demon possession or idolatry, and Christian ecclesiastical ceremonies.
The book Art and Action was completed shortly before the author's death at the age of 51, in January 1997. Beyond ethnographic acuity and theoretical depth, Gell's work is characterized by interdisciplinarity, eclecticism, inventive and often surprising argumentation, provocative thematic and intellectual combinations, imaginative and striking compositions and generalizations.
It is grounded in unconventionality, surprise, creativity, and the formulation of unexpected yet universally relevant theories. Gell's argumentation unfolds through a detailed discussion of theoretical issues touching on anthropology, philosophy, psychology, linguistics, and semiotics.
The edition is enriched with a variety of illustrative materials and in-depth analyses of specific artworks.
