Learning, therefore, is an existential process – it has almost the same boundaries as life itself: it begins from the womb and possibly ends as we approach death. Learning starts with sensory experience and is both individual and social; we also begin social learning through imitation. At the same time, we recognize that the discussion about whether human behavior is determined by the social and natural environment in which a person develops or by their genes is important, and we accept that we have both an evolutionary and a social history. Compliance is, therefore, one of the natural outcomes of learning, although we acknowledge from the outset that sometimes it is necessary to resist, and thus it is essential to see the importance of critical learning, to resist the power inherent in the structures of social groups that forces us to comply.
