This book was first published in 2019. It is the only one in Greek literature that analyzes the Russian strategy of infiltration and dominance in the Orthodox world.
It focuses on Moscow's ambitions to "dethrone" the Ecumenical Patriarchate and usurp its leadership. The impetus for the research and writing was the "war" declared by Moscow against the ecumenical patriarch due to his decision to recognize an autocephalous Church in Ukraine. The invasion of the country, which Russia insists on considering its spiritual and political "colony," has led many to view the book as prophetic. At the same time, it necessitated its updating.
The medieval popular narrative of the "Third Rome" is currently fueled by a national line of creating Moscow's religious "colonies," with obvious political benefits. In Greece, since the early 2000s, a well-structured "hybrid warfare" operation has been raging, aiming to turn Greek society against the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Western orientation of the country.
The author sought to understand how the hubristic Russian "geopolitics of Orthodoxy" was born by studying the formation of Orthodoxy and the worldview of state and church in Russia. The Russians remain captive to their fascination with their imperial past. But does their obsession with power ultimately undermine their influence in the entire Orthodox world?
The attempt to impose military force in Ukraine has caused revulsion in the Orthodox universe, pushing it towards a painful—but necessary—introspection. With the invasion ongoing, one thing is clear: The boots and tanks of the invaders did not crush the Ukrainians, but rather the Russian grandiosity regarding its "leadership" of the Orthodox world.
