Very good and interesting book. The truth is that I have read it twice. The first time I read only "Shantaram" and after a few years I found out that there is a second part called THE MOUNTAIN SHADOW. So I reread the first part and immediately started the second. Both books are perfect.

Description & Specifications

Siddhartha is a semi-autobiographical epic novel with millions of passionate readers around the world. The international critics welcomed it with acclaim, describing it as a literary masterpiece of priceless beauty.

The narrator is a fugitive. After separating from his wife and losing custody of his daughter, his life transforms into a dark abyss. From a student of philosophy and political activist at the University of Melbourne, he becomes a rebel who loses his ideals to heroin, a philosopher who loses his integrity to crime, a poet who loses his soul in a maximum-security prison; one of the most wanted men in Australia.

He is sentenced to twenty years in prison for armed robbery but manages to escape from his prison in Pendridge. When, as a fugitive, he takes refuge in Bombay, his incredible journey toward something undefined begins; perhaps toward what some call the meaning of life.

He becomes involved with the people of the city, forming life bonds with some of them, falls in love, betrays and is betrayed, lives by choice in the slums experiencing absolute poverty, climbs the upper echelons of the Bombay mafia, is imprisoned and brutally tortured, participates in Bollywood films, fights in Afghanistan experiencing the horror and absurdity of war, but mainly he challenges his limits by diving into the unfathomable depths of human existence.

"A true masterpiece!" - Daily Telegraph

"Powerful and unique... an unparalleled achievement." - Sunday Telegraph

"A publishing phenomenon!" - Sunday Times

"Few novels can compete with Siddhartha... unbelievably entertaining!" - The New York Times
