Of all the horrors faced by the Fellowship, none compare to the Balrog. A spirit of fire and darkness, this creature had remained buried for countless centuries in the deepest shadows, far below the Accursed Mountains.

Deep within the earth, digging for Mithril in sunless black rock, the Dwarves awakened something that had surely been buried for ages, an entity of incomprehensible terror, remnants of an age of gods and giants, a creature that should never walk Middle-earth again and for which there were few equivalents in the world, a Balrog of Morgoth. The Balrog could not be harmed by any blade or mechanism designed by Dwarves. After many, the people of Durin and the King of the Dwarves himself fell before the monster, which was called The Demon of Durin.
