September 1960. John Steinbeck is preparing for a journey of wandering across America. He feels that he has lost touch with his own country, with its voice, the smell of its soil, the color and quality of its light, the pulse of its people.
With a pickup truck, Rosinante, and with only his companion Charlie, an old French poodle, he embarks on a journey, trying to rediscover the American identity and culture. He crosses nearly forty states: starting from the North, he travels from Long Island to Maine.
He continues through the Midwestern states and arrives in Chicago. He passes through the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, and from Idaho, he reaches Seattle. He then heads south to San Francisco and his hometown, Salinas, California.
Traveling eastward, he crosses the Mojave Desert, New Mexico, Arizona, reaches Texas, and from there, heads to New Orleans where he witnesses an incident against multiculturalism. In the last part of his journey, he travels through Alabama, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, ending up in New Jersey and New York City.
Written masterfully, during a time of turmoil and racial tensions in the South—which Steinbeck observed firsthand—Travels with Charley is a remarkable journey and a thoughtful look at America itself, on the brink of a turbulent decade.
