Description & Specifications

The Aubrey family is an unusual family. Mr. Aubrey's wife, a kind but eccentric woman, takes care of their four children, the twin daughters Mary and Rose, who are exceptionally talented at the piano, their young son, Richard Quinn, a lively boy, and their eldest daughter, Cordelia, a beautiful and dynamic girl with musical ambitions.

However, this eccentric family rarely experiences moments of calm, as its members struggle to overcome the impacts of the father's unstable character and extravagance on their lives. Now they must take action until he finds stable employment. Although the odds are not in their favor, the Aubreys hope that art will save them from poverty and difficulties.

In The Fountain Overflows, Rebecca West paints a picture of an entire era and captivates us with its strong and compelling characters. She proceeds with the bare yet tender portrayal of a unique family and explores the elusive boundaries between childhood and adult life, between freedom and dependence, between the mundane and the mysterious. A classic book that must be rediscovered. The first part of an iconic trilogy by a great lady of British letters.

THE PRESS WROTE

One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. This is due to the tone that the book emits, the weight of memory it carries, the way it handles time, its linguistic nuances, the way it captivates the reader. Unique. Alessandro Baricco, author

A very long pause followed, so much so that I wondered if my mom and dad would ever speak to each other again. I wasn't afraid that they had argued; only we children fought, but each of them had fallen into a dream. Then dad hesitantly said: “You know, my dear, I am very sorry for all this.” Mom responded before he could finish his sentence. “It's perfectly fine, as long as everything goes well this time. And it will, right?” “Yes, yes, I am sure of it,” dad assured her, adding sarcastically: “I suppose I am capable of doing everything they ask of me. That I am capable of publishing a small suburban newspaper.” “Oh, my dear Piers, I know that the job isn't worthy of you,” mom said passionately. “Nevertheless, how divinely sent it is! How lucky that Mr. Morpurgo happens to own such a newspaper and how kind of him to want to help you...” Her voice faded before she finished her sentence. “Again,” simply added dad with a distracted tone. “Yes, it's strange that such a wealthy man as Morpurgo would bother to get involved with something like the Lovegrove Gazette. From what I hear, it yields satisfactory profits for what it is, but it's peanuts for someone with such huge interests.
