Maugham spent the winter months of 1919 traveling fifteen hundred miles up the Yangtze River. Always more interested in people than places, he recorded keen and detailed thoughts about those he met on countless pieces of paper. In the resulting collection, we encounter Western missionaries, army officers, and company managers who culturally found themselves out of their depth in the vast Chinese civilization. Maugham observes with care and slight irony their persistent and helpless insistence on the life they know.
