Artworks from castings are among the most captivating, colorful, and revealing objects of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Casting was used to decorate a wide range of items, including silver boxes, crosses, book covers, censers, and pyxes for the church, as well as a wide range of silverware for the secular market. The Wyvern Collection includes many top pieces from the 12th to the 16th century. Among the important pieces in this volume are two exceptionally rare Romanesque-style castings around 1160-70 from the Meuse valley: the famous triptych box, possibly originally belonging to the bishop of Liège, and a beautiful châsse (a casting designed to be hung) with scenes from the story of the True Cross, said to come from the famous abbey of Lobbes. The Limoges castings from the 12th and 13th centuries are particularly well represented, with 65 pieces that undoubtedly constitute the finest and most comprehensive collection in private hands. The later painted Limoges castings, from the 15th and 16th centuries, include notable examples of the work of the leading casters, primarily Pierre Reymond, and the spectacular horn of St. Hubert, dated 1538 and signed by Leonard Limosin, which once belonged to Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill. The catalog also includes other exceptional artworks, such as a significant Anglo-Carolingian chrismatory from the 9th century, a small group of enigmatic 12th-century glasses, and luxurious examples of positive work by German goldsmiths of the late medieval period. Colored and painted glass rounds, Italian Renaissance ceramics, luxurious fabrics and tapestries, as well as German and Italian armor are also listed. An appendix presents several important pieces, recently acquired, which complement those published in the first two volumes. With more than 250 objects, all specially photographed, this volume is not just a guide to a particularly rich part of one of the greatest private collections. It is a detailed and authentic guide to medieval and Renaissance castings and other artworks, an incentive for further research, and a feast for the eyes. With 400 color illustrations.
