William Wegman is a globally recognizable American artist whose paintings, photographs, videos, and drawings have been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Today he is perhaps best known for his collaborations with his long-term muses, a constantly expanding group of Weimaraners who perform complex scenes or simply pose gracefully for their portraits.
The book "William Wegman: Being Human" has been curated in close collaboration with distinguished photography writer William A. Ewing and is the most extensive collection of Wegman's photographic work published to date. Organized thematically, the book presents a wealth of outstanding works in a way that highlights the flexibility of Wegman's creative mind as he explores what it means to be human.
From portraits of easily recognizable characters – a downtrodden housewife, a famous actor, a nightclub singer, a golfer clad in broad pattern – to images that play with a wide range of visual languages, Wegman freely draws on elements from fashion photography, cubism, color theory, the tradition of the nude, and art history.
Essays and an interview explore Wegman's approach to his subjects and their lives in the studio. With over 300 images created within the past four years, many of which are published here for the first time, "William Wegman: Being Human" will delight and intrigue both those new to Wegman's work and those who have admired his art for years.
