The story of Aina and Sheri, who both had Gifts, and of Gair, who believed he was ordinary. Gair spent his time looking at the Nose and thinking. Aina could answer questions about the future, while Sheri could find things that were lost. Gair seemed not to have a Gift and knew he was a disappointment to his lively and heroic father - who is the Chief. Perhaps his feelings of not belonging were what made him so curious about these different creatures that lived in the Nose - the Giants and the Dorig. Surely it was because he believed he was ordinary that he tried to become wise and learn as much as he could about the three great Forces of the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. And when the crisis came, Gair found that the knowledge he had acquired would help him save not only his own life but also that of all his people.
