Hoarding is a condition where a person tends to excessively collect and store items and has difficulty discarding things. This results in a cluttered living space and often causes distress, limiting the person's ability to fully function in their home. It is a common condition that affects 2-5% of the population and has long-term consequences for sufferers, family, friends, and the wider community, along with potential health and safety implications. There is an increased risk of injury or the presence of pests. There has been growing media interest, which has increased public awareness, but there was very little literature to help sufferers of the irrational syndrome until now. There is no single reason why people hoard. For some, these behaviors are a way to cope with emotional trauma. For others, there may be a strong emotional connection to certain items or a belief that specific materials have value - such as books, magazines, and newspapers. Hoarding behavior can also be a learned behavior from growing up in a cluttered environment. Sometimes unusual items are hoarded, such as manure and urine. Although hoarding is a common condition, little is known about it. Nearly everyone has some hoarding tendencies, but they may not manifest in a way that disrupts a person's life and space. The true prevalence of hoarding is unclear, but it seems to be a growing problem. With the increased attention the issue is receiving, more people are beginning to recognize that they may have a problem. This book fills a significant gap in the literature for hoarding disorder and uses CBT tools to help people recover and reclaim their space and lives.
