There are two things in life that are certain for Emily Starr: that she will become a great writer and that she and Teddy Kent were destined to be together. As school concludes, her friends leave to pursue their dreams, including Teddy, who is going to an art school in Montreal. Emily chooses to stay at New Moon and, though she misses her friends, she knows that a writer's path is lonely. Each time she returns home, her friends seem more and more distant, especially Teddy. Desperate but determined to hide her feelings, she dedicates herself to completing her novel. When it is rejected, however, her confidence collapses. To drive away thoughts of Teddy, she agrees to marry a man she does not love and to forever abandon her dreams. But could she really have made so many wrong choices?
