The revised histories of photography recorded through the photobook have significantly contributed to the understanding of the medium's culture, especially in places often overlooked, such as Latin America and Africa. However, until now, only a few Chinese books have managed to find a place in historians' shortlists. Nevertheless, China has a fascinating history of photobook publishing, and The Chinese Photobook reveals for the first time the richness and variety of this heritage. Now available in a smaller size at a more affordable price, this hardcover edition is based on a collection compiled by Martin Parr and the Dutch photographic team WassinkLundgren, which is based in Beijing and London. While the collection was initially inspired by Parr's interest in propaganda books and the search for key works of socialist realism from the early days of the Communist Party and the Cultural Revolution era, the selection of books includes key volumes published from 1900 onwards, as well as contemporary works by emerging Chinese photographers.
