The Wings of the Sphinx is the eleventh book in the inexhaustible Inspector Montalbano series by Italian author Andrea Camilleri. Inspector Montalbano faces many challenges. His long-term relationship with Livia is in crisis, he feels time passing by, and the violence in his work has exhausted him. A dead girl is discovered at an illegal dump, with half her face missing. Initially, her identity is unknown, but a tattoo of a sphinx on her left shoulder blade links her to three other girls bearing the same mark, all recently Russian immigrants to Italy. Victims of the underground sex trade, these girls have been rescued from the Mafia nightclub circuit by a Catholic charitable organization. The problem is that the other girls cannot help Montalbano with his investigations as they are all missing. As the investigation progresses, it seems not everyone wants Montalbano to discover what is really behind the seemingly charitable organization. Additionally, Montalbano has to deal with a demanding relationship with his stomach while trying to save his relationship with Livia. The Sphinx is followed by the twelfth novel in the series, The Track of Sand.
