The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor is the first and only professional workstation processor that leverages the 7 nm silicon manufacturing process, allowing engineers to double the density and enhance the transistor budget required for a significant increase in core performance.
With the unveiling of the first generation of "Zen" CPU technology, AMD disrupted the status quo with a microarchitecture completely re-engineered from the ground up and optimized for modern single-threaded and multi-threaded tasks.
With the "Zen 2" microarchitecture of the Threadripper PRO processor, the improvements are numerous, but two stand out, especially regarding high-demand professional computing:
- Up to 15% faster instructions per cycle (IPC)
- Impressive fourfold increase in peak floating point throughput
The first improvement mainly results from enhanced branch prediction and pre-fetching, supported by a much deeper and wider cache distribution, while the second is the outcome achieved both by doubling the width of the FPU data path and by doubling the density. Supporting the increased computational performance, the architects doubled the load-store bandwidth and increased the dispatch and retire bandwidth to minimize the chances of high-performance ALUs being starved of data.
