The Scent of the Night is the sixth crime comic novel in the Inspector Montalbano series by Andrea Camilleri. Montalbano realizes how difficult it is to put on a diving suit while on a boat running on a sea that is not exactly calm. Mimi, at the helm, seems tense and anxious. When an angry eighty-year-old woman holds a terrified and lovesick secretary hostage, Inspector Montalbano is unwillingly drawn into the case. The secretary's boss, a financial consultant, has disappeared along with several billion lira entrusted to him by the good citizens of Vigata. Also missing is the consultant’s young associate, whose uncle happens to be building a house on the site of Inspector Montalbano's favorite olive tree. The Inspector, who loves food and is hesitant about commitments, returns for another appetizing investigation served with Camilleri's classic style. The Scent of the Night is followed by the seventh book in the series, Turning the Corner.
