"Now you are a discard. We have no further use for you in the game. You are free to roam the Bounds, but it will be against the rules to re-enter the game in any world. If you manage to return Home, then you can enter the game in the usual way."
When Jamie unexpectedly discovers the terrifying, dark Existences playing games with the lives of people, he is expelled to the borders of worlds. Only then does he discover that there are countless parallel worlds, all connected through the bounds, and these malevolent creatures use them as a massive chessboard.
Keeping their promise that if he manages to return Home he is free, he becomes the unwilling Random Factor in an endless game of chance.
An irresistible fantasy adventure by Diana Wynne Jones, featuring a bug-loving shape-shifter, a demon-hunter-in-training, and a host of exotic characters struggling with the hope that one day they will return Home.
