Sidney Coleman (1937-2007) earned his Ph.D. from Caltech under the guidance of Murray Gell-Mann. Before completing his dissertation, he was hired by Harvard and remained there throughout his career. As a distinguished theoretical physicist, he is perhaps best known for his brilliant lectures, which were delivered at Harvard and at a series of summer schools in Erice, Sicily. Three times during the 1960s, he taught a graduate course on Special and General Relativity. This book is based on lecture notes taken by three of his students and has been compiled by the Editors.
