Description & Specifications

In the book Invisible Influence, the author who is on the New York Times bestseller list for Contagious, explores the subtle influences that affect our decisions – from what we buy, to the careers we choose and what we eat. If you are like most people, you believe that your individual preferences and opinions guide your choices and behavior. You wear a certain jacket because you liked how it looked. You chose a specific career because you found it interesting. The idea that our choices are guided by our personal thoughts and opinions seems obvious. Right? Wrong. Without realizing it, the behavior of other people has a significant impact on everything we do every moment of our lives, from the trivial to the important. Even strangers influence our judgments and decisions: our attitudes towards a welfare policy change if we are told it is supported by Democrats or Republicans (even though the policy is the same). However, social influence does not just lead us to do the same things as others. In some cases, we mimic those around us. In other cases, we avoid certain choices or behaviors because others do them. We stop listening to a band because it becomes mainstream. We avoid buying the minivan because we don't want to look like a soccer mom. By understanding how social influence works, we can decide when to resist it and when to embrace it – and learn how to use this knowledge to exert more control over our own behavior.
