Description

A version of dramatic conflict is created between the Dark Lord, Sauron, and the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.

In War of the Ring: The Card Game, up to 4 players compete in two teams, the Shadow against the Free Peoples, where each player uses a specific and different deck that represents the strengths and weaknesses of the different factions involved in the war.

The Free Peoples desperately try to complete their quest to destroy the One Ring while simultaneously defending their homelands from Sauron's encroaching hordes and his evil allies.

The Shadow players must strike quickly and decisively before the Ring-bearers complete their mission.

Try to slowly corrupt Frodo by burdening him with wounds, toil, and the sorrow of losing his companions.

During the game, players will take turns playing cards that represent the characters, armies, items, and events of War of the Ring. Each card they play will either aid or hinder the fellowship's journey as it progresses along its path.

They must use these cards either to defend or to conquer the strongholds of Middle-earth, as they struggle to control the new Battleground cards that are activated each round.

With more than 100 original illustrations by the world's greatest Tolkienian artists, including a stunning gallery of landscapes from The Shire to Mordor by John and Fataneh Howe, War of the Ring: The Card Game is more than just a game – it is also an unforgettable collection for all fans of the world imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The game is wonderful and strongly conveys its theme as well as an element from its big brother (War of the Ring board game). It has a clever mechanism with the card cycle, which essentially means that every time you play a card you have to discard another one from your hand, and this forces you to choose what to play strategically, while also setting up your deck for the second part of the game, when the discards are shuffled and become available again as your draw deck.

Personally, I find it quite balanced thematically, but I should note that it requires at least 2 plays to get familiar with the mechanics and the cards each faction has. For 2 players, I recommend starting with the last scenario, which is "The Fellowship of the Ring" as it is shorter and more accessible.

Afterwards, you can either go into the duel where all cards are played and there is a bit more chaos in trying to create combos, or the 4 Player format, which can also be played with 2 players, with each player essentially having 2 separate decks, which is the most strategic mode. It plays wonderfully with 4 players, but I wouldn't recommend it with 3.

I would rate the game as medium complexity. The more games you play, the more it will give you. Completion time ranges from 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the mode you choose.

Excellent game. Incredibly thematic, fast for what it offers, and balanced, regardless of which side you play. Full of atmosphere (especially if you play it while listening to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack). The implementation of the 2v2 game is very good. Not only do the teams differ, but also the players within the same team due to their decks, so good cooperation and synchronization are required. Highly recommended for fans of card management games, especially for fans of the lore.
