Description

Since the first edition of the Complete Sets of Nautical Tables and the Practical Navigation Overview by J W Norie in 1803, many changes have been made to the tables, both in content and presentation. New tables have been added, while old ones have been removed to adapt to evolving navigation techniques, aiming to improve the accuracy of calculated positions and reduce fatigue from calculations. With the introduction of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), its proven accuracy and reliability in all weather conditions have led to trust and almost unquestionable reliance on its ability to provide a ship's position, course, and speed. Its use is widespread, but the maritime environment is hostile, and electronic equipment or system failure is possible. No prudent navigator would embark on a sea passage without a reliable alternative navigation method.

The explanation is in the form of a detailed step-by-step description, with examples, of various methods for performing nautical calculations using a scientific calculator and/or tables. Many distinguished editors have worked on Norie's Nautical Tables over the years, and this edition includes new contributions from Francois Hugo. This edition now presents formulas in a suitable format for direct entry into a scientific calculator. Since navigation is possible even without a suitable calculator, logarithms have been retained.

* All tables required for coastal and deep-sea navigation are included.* A simple homogeneous interpolation method for all trigonometric tables is used.* Some tables and data are also included that are not directly available on a ship or are used only in examinations.
