Description

Description

This heavily revised and reclassified edition of Intellectuals and Society is more than half again larger than the first edition. Four new chapters have been added about intellectuals and race, including a chapter on race and intelligence. These new chapters reveal the radically different views on race that prevailed among the intellectual class at the beginning of the twentieth century and at the end - and how these opposing views on race had the same dogmatic quality and the same refusal to accept differing views among their contemporaries, let alone engage in serious discussions with opposing views. Moreover, each of these very different views on race produced verbal excesses and absurdities, with serious social consequences, although of a very different kind in the two eras. Other additions in this edition include a critique of John Rawls' perception of justice and a reconsideration of the so-called "trickle-down theory" associated with "tax breaks for the rich." There are also other revisions, from the preface to the final chapter, which has been extensively rewritten to gather and highlight the themes of the other chapters, and to make indisputable what Intellectuals and Society attempts to achieve.
