The Composition and Form is the most comprehensive document of one of the landmarks of modern art education, the famous Bauhaus Basic Course, in Weimar, Germany. Itten was the master who organized it at the invitation of Walter Gropius.
It was published in 1963 while Itten was still alive and was revised and enriched by Itten's widow, Anneliese Itten. It includes new material from the Bauhaus Basic Course, as well as visual examples and descriptions of the refinements made by Itten in later classes he taught in Berlin (1926-1932), in Krefeld (1932-1938), and in Zurich (1938-1960).
The Bauhaus Basic Course was designed as a trial period for assessing students with different backgrounds, to determine their creative talent, assist them in career selection, and teach them basic composition for a future career in art.
Each of the 200 or more images presented here is described in detail to help the reader understand the purpose of artistic education. The original works of the students include studies from nature, pure forms and abstractions, three-dimensional works, and projects in the applied arts.
Furthermore, the book includes fascinating material regarding the evaluation of contemporary artistic education. The book has universal appeal for a basic course that could serve as a means for individual creative development, and can be used today by students and teachers of the arts as a foundation for their own basic course.
Johannes Itten (1888-1967) was engaged with the problems of composition and color throughout his life. His own color theory, published in the books The Art of Color and The Elements of Color (Student Edition), represents a compelling synthesis of his knowledge as a painter and his experience as a teacher, the two parts that constitute Itten's personality and work.
